About ObituaryUS
ObituaryUS is a free place for families in the United States to write, publish and share an obituary. It exists because a good obituary should not cost hundreds of dollars, and should not come with flowers and candles for sale beside it.
Who runs it
ObituaryUS is a free service from EverSettled, a company that helps families settle an estate after someone dies: closing accounts, dealing with banks and insurers, and probate when it is needed. The site is operated by Kempster Berger Inc., the company behind a small network of free sites for families facing a death, including FuneralUS, ProbateUS and DeathUS.
How it can be free
We don’t earn money from obituary pages. There are no fees, no paid tiers, no ads and no flower, candle or tree sales on them. Some families who write an obituary here later want help with everything else that follows a death, and EverSettled earns from that service. Nobody hears from EverSettled unless they tick a box asking for it.
Our guides carry ads for EverSettled, labeled “Sponsored.” Obituary pages never do. Their only mention is one line in the footer.
What we will not do
- Copy obituaries from funeral homes, newspapers or other sites. Every page here is written by a family.
- Sell, syndicate or license an obituary, or let anyone copy it for profit.
- Write obituaries with software. The writer turns your answers into a first draft with fixed templates, and every word is yours to change.
- Show a full birth date or a home address unless you choose to.
Corrections
If you own an obituary, sign in and change it; the page updates at once and old addresses keep working. If you spot a mistake on a page you don’t own, use “Report a problem” on that page, or email info@funeralus.com with the page address. For our guides, tell us what is wrong and where you saw the right information, and we will check it at the source.
Takedowns and family disputes
If an obituary is about someone who is alive, use “Report a problem” and choose “This person is alive.” We look at those reports first.
If you are close family or the executor and object to a page, email info@funeralus.com with the page address, your relationship to the person and what you object to. We will contact the person who created the page and work toward a fair result: a correction, a change of owner, or taking the page down. The process is described in our terms of use.
Privacy
How we handle accounts, photos and condolences is in our privacy policy.
